One of the best parts of the week is sharing success stories on how a Talk Sporty technique made a conversation easier or how a sports conversation has led to more opportunities.
Here’s a story from my work week with the Mariners. Outfielder Michael Saunders is from hockey crazy Canada. I thought he would appreciate talking about something other than baseball, so I asked which team he was rooting for in the playoffs. Here’s how the conversation rolled right along.
Me: “Who are you rooting for?”
Michael: “The hometown Canucks of course. They’re the top seed, but I think it’s going to be a tough first round against Chicago.”
Me: “You think so, Chicago barely made the playoffs?”
Michael: “The Blackhawks are still the defending champs and they can score at will, but I think if Vancouver can make it past the first round they’ll make it all the way to the finals. The Sedin brothers are strong and I like their chances against everyone else.
It was a successful exchange. Michael was smiling and enjoying a chance to talk about something that interested him and I felt good that my “Conversation Starters” worked this week because I haven’t been able to watch much hockey this season. It didn’t matter, Michael carried the conversation and I was able to participate.
