Sports metaphors can be effective descriptors at work – if everyone is on the same page and understands a metaphor’s correct meaning.  Each week we’ll take a look at a familiar sports phrase or metaphor in business, take a look at its origin, explain it’s meaning and demonstrate how to use it in business.

Talk Sporty to MeSports phrase:  It’s a slam dunk

Slam dunk is a basketball term and considered a “gimme” shot meaning, a dunk happens so close to the basket that it’s a ‘can’t miss.’  Slam dunks are a flashy play that usually requires an amount of authority and skill to execute.

Business Application: In business the phrases are used to describe something that’s a ‘done deal’ or a foregone conclusion.

  • For example: The proposal you put together for Coffey and Sons is a slam dunk.

That means its expected that Coffey and Sons will agree to the proposal and move forward.
