Welcome to another week and another chance to increase your likeability and visibility in the workplace.  Everyone wants to be noticed – in a good way – and joining in the small talk and sports chitchat is a great way to start.

Jen Mueller America's Expert TalkerThis is a big week for football fans.  In case you haven’t picked up on the commercials and conversation, it’s Super Bowl week.  There will be an entire week of events, interviews, and conversations related to Sunday’s big game between the Giants and Patriots.  Stay tuned to this blog later in the week for effective conversation strategies around the Super Bowl and easy ways to transition to other topics you might feel more comfortable talking about.  For the time being – if you want to join the conversation with your coworkers, ask who they think will win and why.

While the Super Bowl is guaranteed to dominate water-cooler conversations this week, here are a few other topics catching the attention of sports fans.

Pro Bowl – The NFL’s version of an All Star game favored the offense Sunday.  The AFC beat the NFC 59-41.  Every quarterback who played in the game threw at least 2 touchdown passes.  Did you like the offense?  What does this say about the so-called best defenders in the league?

NHLThe National Hockey League  held their All-Star game Sunday.  Unlike any other all-star game, two captains chose their teams from the entire pool of All Stars, which resulted in interesting matchups against current teammates.  Marian Gaborik scored a hat trick in a game that feature wide-open play, no-hitting style and lots of sweet passes.  What do you think of the NHL’s take on the All-Star game?

MLB –The wait is finally over as the Prince Fielder sweepstakes ended last week.  The largest remaining free agent on the market signed with the Detroit Tigers.  The Tigers were late to the party, but needed a bat to replace DH Victor Martinez, who tore his ACL recently. The 27-year-old Fielder signed a 9-year, $214 million deal. The 32-year-old Albert Pujols signed a 10-year $254 million deal with Anaheim in December.  Which team got the better free agent deal?

Australian OpenNovak Djokovic beat Rafael Nadal in the longest Grand Slam singles final in the history of pro tennis.  Djokovic has now won 3 straight majors.  Nadal has now lost three straight Grand Slam finals.  How did that title matchup rate?  What does this do to cement Djokovic as one of the best players in the game?
