Sports topics and headlines make great small talk at the office, help you break the ice, lead to better rapport and future conversations.  Here are a few of the hot topics in the sports world this week.  Just read the summary, click on the link for more information and ask the questions provided.

NFL LockoutIt appears the four month long lockout could end this week.  The players need to sign off on the new collective bargaining agreement and then everyone can get back to the business of preparing for an NFL season.  Expect a lot of action this week with teams signing players because they haven’t been able to do that with the lockout in place.  Early reports indicate training camps could open as early as Thursday for some teams.  Since the league only canceled one pre-season game (The Hall of Fame Game) do you think fans will harbor any resentment toward the league for the lockout?  How do you think the lockout will affect your team and it’s ability to prepare for the season?

Favre Rumors – Everyone said “I’ll believe it when I see it,” when Brett Favre announced his retirement after last season, since he has a history of changing his mind at the last minute and deciding to play.  It’s happening again with rumors linking him to the Philadelphia Eagles.  Do you think there is any truth to the rumors?  Should Favre try to play one more year? What about if he’s in a backup roll?

MLB –  The trade deadline for major league baseball is Sunday July 31.  Players can be traded after that date, but it’s a little more complicated, so expect any big moves to happen this week.  For teams who are in contention to make the playoffs this is a time for them to load up on an extra piece or key piece for a playoff push.  For teams that have fallen out of the race, they might trade a successful veteran to gain young talent for future years.Keep track of the latest trade rumors here.   How’s your team looking this year?  Do you expect any big moves?

Losing Streak – The Seattle Mariners are making headlines for the wrong reason this month.  They lost a franchise record 15 straight games as of July 24th.  It’s frustrating for their fans, players and coaches.  They play in 3 games in New York before returning home.  When do you think the streak will end?  What’s missing from the lineup that led to the streak?

Tour de France – The month long Tour de France ended Sunday with Cadel Evans becoming the first Australian to win the prestigious race.  How much of the race did you follow?  Is it good for the sport to have a new winner after all of the doping scandals and rumors the last few years?

PGATiger Woods fired his long time caddy Steve Williams last week.  Tiger said the move came because it was time for a change and he needed a new voice on the bag.  Williams was disappointed by the decision after spending 12 years with Tiger and developing a close friendship.  What’s more, Williams never signed a confidentiality agreement and now has plans to write a book.  Williams says the book will be more of a biography than a tell-all about Tiger, but nevertheless, it could be interesting.  What do you think of Tiger’s decision and timing?  How would you have handled the situation?
