Our lives consist of a series of interactions.  We’re engaged in many different communications throughout the day.   These conversation starters are designed to help you make a connection, further those relationships and open the door to more opportunities.  It won’t happen over night, but the more you engage with your co-workers, colleuges and friends the more rapport and trust gets built.  And that’s when opportunities come along.   So what are you waiting for?  Pick a topic and start talking.

The Masters- What a great final round Sunday for everyone except Rory McIlroy.  The 21-year old led heading into the Sunday, but imploded during the final round.  Tiger Woods rallied, but fell short.  Several others vied for the title, but in the end it was Charl Schwartzel who stunned the field and won the green jacket. (Which is a very prestigious honor that goes to the winner.)  Did you have a chance to watch any of it?  What did you think of the crazy turn of events Sunday?  Who were you cheering for?

MLB – Slugger Manny Ramirez retired abruptly last week after the league informed him that he tested positive for a banned substance, and since it was his second offense, he would be suspended for 100 games (more than half the season.)  Manny chose to retire instead of face the punishment and he says he’s at peace with the situation. How do you feel about it?  Does this hurt his chances of getting into the Hall of Fame?  How much does it tarnish his reputation and what he was able to accomplish during his career?

NHL – The NHL (hockey) playoff start this week.  The defending Stanley Cup champions had to sweat it out Sunday night.  The Chicago Blackhawks couldn’t take care of business on their own and had to wait for a Dallas loss to clinch the #8 seed in the Western Conference.  Chicago plays the top seeded Vancouver Canucks in the first round.  Who wins the best of 7 series?  Will you follow any of playoffs?  Who’s your pick to win it all?

Montreal plays Boston starting Thursday and government leaders want to postpone a previously scheduled debate so it doesn’t interfere with the game.  Only in Canada, eh?  What would you postpone if your favorite team was in the playoffs?

NBA – The NBA (basketball) regular season wraps up this week.  There are several teams still jockeying for playoff position including the former Seattle team the Oklahoma City Thunder.  They disposed of the Lakers Sunday and are fighting for the #2 seed in the Western Conference.  It’s tough for most Sonics fans to watch “their” team flourish. Who are you rooting for?  Who wins league MVP this season?   The Lakers loss was their 5th in a row.  They’ll make the playoffs, but are they up for another playoff push or fading down their stretch?

Misc – If anyone is still interested in Jenn Sterger, the woman involved in the Brett Favre sexting scandal, she’ll be giving her first TV interview since the incident this week.  Discussing Sterger and her roll in the incident is a potentially controversial topic in the workplace.  So I wouldn’t recommend it as a conversation starter.   You could, however, use it at a teaching lesson and a reminder to employees about company policies regarding proper workplace conduct.
